A native of Detroit, Michigan, Robert Dueweke joined the Augustinian Order (O.S.A.) with the intention of living in a religious community and of having the opportunity to work in the overseas mission apostolates. After completing a Masters of Divinity with Mission Specialization degree at Catholic Theological Union (Chicago), he worked as a missionary for fifteen years in the northern Peruvian Diocese of Chulucanas. Ministry in this diocese was unique for its implementation of the pastoral program, the New Image of the Parish, from the Better World Movement. Parish and diocesan structures were redesigned with the emphasis on basic Christian communities and implementation of the vision of Vatican II (1962-1965): communion, participation, and dialogue.
Dueweke returned from South America to the United States in 1989, worked for six years as Vicariate Coordinator for Hispanic Ministry in the Archdiocese of Chicago, and then reassigned as assistant pastor to work with the Hispanic and Palestinian communities at St. Rita of Cascia parish on Chicago's South Side. He pursued studies in Ignatian spirituality at Creighton University (Omaha) and received a Ph.D. in Theology/Spirituality from St. Paul University (Ottawa, Canada) in 2004.
Dueweke's past activities include facilitating retreats, such as the Ignatian Exercises (English/Spanish), in North Carolina and in Toronto, working with Hispanic and Native American ministry in Cherokee, in the Smoky Mountains, and teaching theology of the early Church (Patrology) for several semesters in the seminary in Trujillo, Peru. Dueweke was the director of the Tepeyac Institute, a school for leadership training and ministerial formation and past director Formation to the Permanent Diaconate in the diocese of El Paso, Texas. (see www.tepeyacinstitute.com). He also finished a year-long fellowship at the Lonergan Institute at Boston College (2015-2016). His research areas were 1) an evaluation of religious life according to the thought of Lonergan, 2) an online course on transcendental precepts, and 3) a study on Lonergan's macroeconomics.
In May 2016, Dueweke became the Order's NGO representative to the United Nations. In this position, he gave input on human rights and climate refugees at the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). His term at the UN ended in July 2021, and he lives in Eastern Kentucky. Dueweke's focus is on promoting the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), designing a ministry on the environment, promoting Pope Francis's Laudato Si Action Platform, and the synodal process within the Lexington Diocese.
